In celebration of the International Day of Happiness (March 20), the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions released the latest World Happiness Report. This report is a landmark survey of the state of global happiness that ranks 156 out of the 195 countries by how happy the citizens perceive themselves to be.

Countries are ranked on an annual basis based on six key variables which include GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and freedom from corruption.

According to the report, no African country was listed in the top 10 or top 50 countries worldwide which means we still have a long way to go. However, there are several countries that are ranked in the top 100.

Here is the list of the top 10 happiest African countries in ascending order.

Congo Brazzaville

Making a significant improvement from 2018?s report by climbing 12 spots from 114 to 102, the oil-rich country is making significant strides with their personal well-being.

Benin

Tying with Congo Brazzaville at the #102 spot, Benin also sees an improvement from 2018?s ranking (136)

Ivory Coast

Ranked number 99 worldwide, Ivory Coast secures itself a space in the top 100, after being ranked as world?s number 107 in 2018.

Ghana

Sharing borders with Ivory Coast, Ghana follows closely after securing rank number 98. It also made a significant improvement from 2018?s report (108). It seems the two neighboring countries are spreading the happiness.

Cameroon

Earning the number 96 spot, Cameroon sees itself moving up 3 places from 2018?s report.

Morocco

The country saw a decline in the ranking from 85 in 2018 to 89 in 2019. I?m sure smiling will improve their rank next year.

Algeria

Another country seeing a decline in their rank from world?s number 84 to number 88 in 2019.

Nigeria

Taking Morocco?s former rank number, the West-African nation is the third happiest country in Africa.

Libya

The country was still ranked the second happiest country in Africa in 2018 and that facts remains true in this year?s report. The, however, did improve on their worldwide rank moving two places up from number 72.

Mauritius

Ranked number 57 in the Happiness Report, Mauritius is the happiest country in Africa. With their stable economy being supported by tourism and peaceful governance, it is no surprise to see them high up in the list.
