Top 5 Natural Disasters Recorded In Africa This Decade

2 min

Natural disasters aren’t new concepts in the world. They have been around since the beginning of time; unexpected; devastating; and unwanted in all parts of the world. While Africa doesn’t have as many natural disaster records as other continents, the ones recorded this decade have been nothing short of devastating. These are the top 5 natural disasters recorded in Africa this decade.

5. Southern Africa Floods

  • Year: 2011
  • Country affected: South Africa, Botswana

Heavy rain, influenced by La Nina, caused flooding in South Africa and Botswana. The latter particularly received 75% of its yearly rainfall in just three days. This brought about the loss of about 500 lives and over 6000 people displaced or evacuated. It also brought about the closure of more than 600 schools and over 40 health units.

4. East Africa Drought

  • Year: 2011
  • Countries Affected: Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, Djibouti

A persistent absence of rain began in late 2010 after which a massive drought affected the Eastern African countries between July 2011 and mid-2012. The drought plunged East Africa into the worst food security crisis Africa has faced in over 6 decades.

Somalia had it the worst as food and water became extremely scarce. It was estimated that between 50,000 and 100,000 people died due to famine.

3. Nabro Volcanic Eruption

  • Year: 2011
  • Country affected: Eritrea

Nabro, a volcano found in the Southern Red Sea region of Eritrea, erupted in 2011. The volcano spewed ash over hundreds of kilometres, affecting food and water sources as well as air travel in some parts. It was also reported that there were cases of livestock mortality, migration, critical water shortage and human health problems.

The eruption was the highest altitude injection of sulfur dioxide ever observed by satellite.

2. Cyclone Kenneth

  • Year: 2019
  • Countries affected: Seychelles, Comoros, Mayotte, Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi

This actually happened just last week, for those who don’t keep up with current affairs. Despite the affected countries making efforts to anticipate the disaster, cyclone Kenneth killed 48 people; 7 in the Comoros and 41 in Mozambique.

Unfortunately for Mozambique, this wasn’t the only cyclone that struck.

1. Cyclone Idai

  • Year: 2019
  • Countries Affected: Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi

Intense Tropical Cyclone Idai was one of the worst cyclones on record to affect Africa and the southern hemisphere. Idai brought strong winds and caused severe flooding which killed at least 1007 people; 602 in Mozambique, 344 in Zimbabwe, 60 in Malawi and one in Madagascar. The numbers could be higher than the ones mentioned above.

To make matters worse, a cholera outbreak came about with more than 4000 cases confirmed. Talk about one bad event followed by another.
