Mbuvi Gideon Kioko Mike Sonko, simply known as Mike Sonko, is quite a polarizing politician in Kenya. Some people criticize his methods of running a big county like Nairobi as governor. Whether you like him or hate him, there is no denying that he seems to always carry evidence whenever he makes accusations. Let’s give him that at least, most politicians accuse each other based on hearsay. So, let’s look at some facts about the incumbent Nairobi governor, Mike Sonko.
5. The name Sonko
Sonko is a sheng word which simply means “a rich person” or “boss”; whatever bursts your bubble. As the name suggests, Sonko indeed is a sonko. If you google his cars, office and videos of him dishing out cash to people, it is quite evident that he has a lot more.
According to Sonko, he claims his source of wealth could be traced back to his high school days where he engaged in several business activities.
4. His reign in politics
Mike Sonko rose to national political prominence when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Makadara Constituency. His win was mainly attributed to the fact that he was considered a man of the people in the constituency; he still is to this date. His presentation in parliament was criticized by fellow politicians when he wore gold chains and embraced mohawks in parliament sittings.
Thankfully, he changed his look to a more professional style when he became the first Senator of Nairobi County in 2013. He then showed his interest to become the governor of the county after being unable to work cohesively with the then-governor Dr. Evans Kidero. Sonko won the 2017 gubernatorial elections defeating fellow candidates like Evans Kidero, Miguna Miguna, and Peter Kenneth.
3. Sonko Rescue Team
During his time in the Senate, he formed the Sonko Rescue Team, an officially registered Non-Governmental Organization, that provided government-like services to residents of Nairobi slums. The then governor of Nairobi County, Dr. Evans Kidero opposed the activities of the group, citing conflict of interests with the county government’s operations. The Senator acquiesced and donated the vehicles to the county government after several weeks of tense public exchanges.
2. He was once a convict
He is known to have been a notorious jail-breaker who escaped mysteriously from Shimo La Tewa Prison, Mombasa in 1998 and was re-arrested a year later. Sonko was arrested towards the end of 1997 before he escaped to attend his mother Saumu Mukami’s burial in 1998. He was re-arrested in 1999 and locked in Kamiti Maximum Security Prison. He was, however, released in 2000 as a fully transformed man with the interest to serve the underprivileged in the society.
A report by The Star suggests that Mike Sonko was actually released because he was tested HIV positive. Seriously, you can go and read the report here. Mike was quick to respond and has given the newspaper three days to apologize and retract the defamatory statement.
1. He is the easiest man to contact
Most politicians tend to hide their contacts so as to avoid spam calls, texts, and e-mails. Sonko’s approach is quite interesting. If the contacts Tuko provides are anything to go by, you should be able to send him a WhatsApp message. He could help you with that debt you have, who knows?
